Edwalls Ur is one of Örebro's oldest companies and can almost be seen as an institution. In 1862 the company was founded by P.A. Åberg — watchmaker and the person who installed Örebro's first telephones. Åberg continued to run the company until 1918 when Gunilla Edwall's grandfather took over the business. For three generations, the Edwall family has run Edwall's Ur and Gunilla has already begun ensuring for the tradition to be passed on. These days, her niece Karolina is already a part of company.
In addition to Gunilla and Karolina, Gunilla's brother Mårten also remains in the company but at the age of 76 he is now a part-time worker. Once upon a time, he was a watchmaking specialist in Rolex, with training from the prestigious brand in Switzerland during the 80s. For 25 years Edwall's Ur were authorized by Rolex and people came from all over the world to buy the fabled timepieces. Although the authorisation is no longer active after Rolex switched to working with fewer authorised watchmakers, the knowledge remains and Edwalls Ur still accepts Rolex watches for repair. It is precisely the repairs of wristwatches, wall clocks and other automatic and mechanical timepieces that remain as the real watchmaking craft according to Gunilla.
“Today, anyone can shop for watches online, but if you buy a watch online, you don't know if it has been serviced correctly. For the craft, Edwalls Ur and other watchmakers fulfill an important function. We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship and always provide a one-year warranty on our repairs to ensure customers are satisfied and feel welcomed back. That's probably a big contributing reason why we have so many customers who come back and always say they're happy that we're still there.”
How did Froda help you?
“We got in touch with Froda through a partner when we were going to equip, renovate the shop and install better bars. Safety is important as a watchmaker so it was something we needed to do and Froda solved all the worries at once. After that, we have also borrowed to pay off a check credit from a major bank. It was expensive and simply cost too much for us, while we didn't need it either.”
Why did you choose Froda?
“From the beginning it was because we got the best offer from Froda but it was also so simple and smooth. We sent an application and then the solution was there and we got help right away. When you've been pitted against banks for as many years as we have, Froda was wonderful. Incredibly much easier to use and redeeming to get the help we got right away. In addition, the last time we turned to Froda, we received the money at once. It's amazing and something out of the ordinary. You really feel that Froda trusts you and that we can trust Froda. It's a win-win situation and definitely one of the best choices we've made.”
How does the future look like for Edwall's Ur?
“I hope to be able to work for many years to come, even though I recently turned 70, I am driven by how fun it is to work with this. My brother and I are also the third generation Edwall to run this place, and it is determined that my niece Karolina will continue on as the fourth generation Edwall watchmaker. It's an incredible feeling, and I definitely believe it's going to be excellent. '
Edwalls Ur remains in Örebro, as the institution it is for all of Örebro if not Sweden, with a rich history all the way back to 1862, when the world was completely different.
Froda was founded in 2015 with a clear mission to democratize the access to financing and provide small and medium-sized businesses with the same opportunities to grow as large ones. Through digital processes and technological innovation, Froda has shortened the loan process from months to minutes, making it easy for entrepreneurs to invest in their ideas.
Today, Froda is one of Sweden's fastest-growing tech companies with a 1.7 billion SEK valuation and well known investors such as Karl-Johan Persson, Nicklas Storåkers and Victor Jacobsson among the owners.
In 2021, Froda launched a strategic initiative within embedded financing and through it, we have expanded to the Nordics and the UK, as well as having established partnerships with Visa, Lunar and Checkout.com among others.
